Newton Abbot is a retained station which means the firefighters all have other employment and are summond to the station by pocket alerter, and are on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week. We attend a 2 hour training session every Monday evening, between 19:00 and 21:00 hours, and attend school fetes and carnivals, we also undertake Community Fire Safety, fitting of smoke alarms, and giving fire safety advice, and school talks, we regularly take part in Exercise's, to keep up our core key skills.
We also ran a (D.O.E) Duke of Edinburgh's awards scheme.
Sometimes we hold open day's which always seems very popular with the community, and put on drill displays including ladder and pump drills.
Newton Abbot station is one of the busiest retained station's in Devon & Somerset
(Station Turnouts see below). These range from Special service calls ie :- Road Traffic Collisions, Lift Rescues to Building & Car fires and False Automatic fire alarms (to Sheltered housing etc).
We are a satalite station to Torquay and are often sent on standby to cover Torbay and the surrounding Stations.
Our work is very rewarding and challenging, and our personel have a varied knowledge base due to the varied nature of the firefighters primary employment.
